BIOMG 1350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Phospholipid Scramblase, Dim Sum, Photobleaching
Document Summary
Quote of the day: shout out to asian girls let the lights dim sum. - drake. Bacterial and eukaryotic cells have plasma membranes. Membranes are composed of lipids and proteins. Different phospholipids named after the outermost group on the head (choline) Saturated: every carbon has hydrogen attached to it. Unsaturated: carbon has double bond instead of a bound hydrogegn. Phospholipids are the most abundant lipids in membranes. Differences in heads, how the tail is attached. Glycolipids have sugar attached to head and oh- group. Cholesterol has on oh- group attached to the head. Tails point together, heads point in water so that hydrophobic region escapes the water. A bilayer sheet will wrap around itself into a sphere because it"s energetically favorable. Can move within the plane of the membrane. Double bonds kicks out the tail so that it takes up more space. Can pack in spaces between the lipids. Certain phospholipids tend to be on outside/inside, etc.
