Very young babies use emotional expression in interactions. Intersubjectivity - aware of shared experience with others: social referencing - looks to others for information on safety, emotional display rules : watches others to learn how to communicate genuinely and effectively toddlers. Emotions that reflect awareness of others assessment - shame, guilt, embarrassment, empathy. Infant persistence: persistence was/is associated with greater levels of cognitive development. Extending periods of interactions also influences persistence. Marshmallow experiment: (set up marshmallow for toddler, toddlers can wait for more marshmallows later or eat the one now) -paradigm used to assess persistence in infants and toddlers. Concerns about emotional effects of group care for infants. Mothers have a greater effect than child care on attachment. Low quality care has interactive effects with low maternal sensitivity. Quality of care is most significant factor.
