People in the middle ages only reacted to very immediate problems (no intention of state building). This was based on the process of trial and error. Feudalism is the system of social exchange and trust. Also called the system of reciprocity (contract from one free man to the other. There was a basic trust because of the oath that made the vessel loyal to the lord and the other way around (rule over the people). Based on exchange of money, advice and help in fighting wars. Based on the idea that the lord should protect the vassal and give him land. The core idea is personal politics and not territorial politics.
