Subsidized schools until 400 ad for philosophy. Constantine came in 400 ad and converted the state to christianity and elbowed philosophy out of the way. Schools had to walk away from the way of life of philosophy. No longer have ability to think on own or question christianity. 1600- end of middle ages, universities have to believe in god but outside of university independent scholars create new ideas. Immanuel kant- first time you could be philosophy professor at university. Philosopher polluted by concept that to study is to study and unpack text- way of life has changed from being a good person to being a good scholar. Twist- when people know the world is going to end they are very calm and do not panic about it. Can you trust your mind and your senses. Descarte says because of dreams you can"t trust your senses. Senses give you disorganized information and your mind needs to put it together.
