Ch. 12 cancer caused by uncontrolled growth or spread of abnormal cells: 100s of types of cancer. In bone marrow they displace the healthy marrow cells: get decreased platelets and decreased ability to clot, effects bone marrow and spleen, first three are considered solid cancer (tumors) In situ cancer- staying in one place and has not spread yet: can crowd out healthy cells and can possibly infringe on healthy tissue. Is benign but is interfering with nerves and blood flow. Infectious disease: hepatitis b or c (result of coming in contact with infected blood, related to liver cancer, hpv (sexually transmitted infection) can cause cervical cancer. Leading sites of new cancer cases and deaths: prostate cancer (only concern for men) top cause for men, breast is big for women, lung and bronchus are second for both, colon and rectum are thirds, most deaths.
