STAT-2300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Descriptive Statistics, Statistical Inference, False Relation
Document Summary
Statistics the science of collecting, organizing, summarizing, and analyzing information to draw conclusions or answer questions. In addition, statistics is about providing a measure of confidence in any conclusions. A lurking variable is often present, and sometimes is the only thing that can relate two of the variables in focus. Descriptive statistics consists of organizing and summarizing data (ex: 78% of the students ) Inferential statistics uses methods that take a result from a sample, extend it to the population, and measure the reliability of the result. Collect the data needed to answer the questions. Qualitative variable allow for classification of individuals based on characteristics. Quantitative variable provide numerical measurements of individuals. Discrete has finite number of possible values. Continuous infinite number of possible values (often rounded) Interval = when the differences in the variable values have algebra based meaning (temp) In research, we wish to determine how the explanatory variable affects the response variable.
