Document Summary

Chapter 1: matter and energy- an atomic perspective. Chemistry- the study of the composition, properties and transformations (changes) of matter. Theory- explanation or model of a natural phenomena. Scientific law- concise statement of fundamental scientific principle. Scientific theory- explains why a scientific law is true. Democritus- matter composed of indivisible atoms in constant motion. Aristotle- matter composed of 4 elements: earth, wind, air, water. Evolve over time as more evidence becomes available. Mass is neither created or destroyed in chemical reactions. Pure chemical substance will always have same elements in same relative amounts. Same elements can combine in different ratios to get diff. compounds. Smallest identifiable unit of an element is an atom. Each element has a unique atomic mass (not valid) Solid- defined shape and volume (held in place) Liquid- defined volume but not shape (close but can move) Gas- no defined shape or volume (far apart and independent) Intensive property- doesn"t matter how much material (cid:523)temp, melt point(cid:524)
