Document Summary
Air = more oxygen rich than water. Fish, larval amphibians and some adult amphibians = efficient gills. Require more oxygen to fuel muscle action and dispose of carbon dioxide. Attach to side of fish, make hole in flesh and suck out blood and bodily fluids. Hagfish: feed on sick or dead fish. Shark = excrete oil from liver to keep afloat. Must swim forward constantly to ventilate gills. Rely on sense of smell and sight is only used at short distances. Well developed eyes and sense of smell. Has a swim bladder to regulate buoyancy. Live in temporary ponds and streams in s. hemisphere. When water recedes => go to surface to get air. Burrow in mud before water completely disappeared. In freshwater or in decaying leaf litter. Successful adaptation: ability to capture insects w sticky tongue. Social: vocalizations to attract mates and warn rivals.
