AVS-4130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Influenza, Specific-Pathogen-Free, Antibody
Document Summary
Eggs are usually more expensive: organic eggs, hens must be fed a completely organic diet from hatching. The birds are routinely tested to make sure that they are healthy this can cost > / bird. These are known as specific pathogen free (spf eggs). The embryos are infected with the attenuated (non-lethal) virus which grows and the embryonic fluids are harvested as a human vaccine. Approximately 1 embryonic egg per dose of human influenza vaccine: therapeutic and prophylactic delivery of egg-yolk. 2: the hen gives her offspring antibodies through the egg. The yolk takes many days to grow (enlarge) in the ovary as it accumulates lipids and proteins. Some of these proteins are antibodies and they accumulate in the yolk. You could then feed these eggs to young children giving them a nutrition"s meal and also giving them antibodies against a pathogen. The antibodies could also be extracted from the yolks to give an even more concentrated product.
