AVS-3700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Ammonium Hydroxide, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Detergent
Document Summary
Ractopamine is a feed additive used in the us to increase lean meat production. Clenbuterol is a feed additive that is also used as a bronchial dilator. It is illegal in the us because it leaves residue in the meat. It is also used to make gas and plastics. Types of processing: cooking, pelletizing, crimping, drying, fermenting, homogenization, pasteurization, high heat pressurization, ammonization, cracking, smoking, curing, grinding. Haylage = hay crops fermented into a silage type product. Purpose of processing: feed preservation, logistics for diet/ration formulation, alter physical form/particle size, remove barriers such as the seed coat, improve palatability, isolate specific parts. Is the grain more valuable if certain parts of it have been removed: alter nutrient composition, detoxify, increase animal production, improve digestibility. Acid can be added to feeds in order to inhibit microbe growth and prevent spoilage. Ammonia and urea can be added to the feed for ruminants in order to feed the microbes in the gut.
