PSY 324 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Institutional Review Board, College Town, Informed Consent
Document Summary
There is a lot of false information out there, and it is important to recognize it: for example, data are missing or methods are problematic (unequal comparisons) Publication bias: research showing negative or no effect not often published: encourages altering the data for more positive results. Just because a test says a participant fits in a certain group doesn"t necessarily mean they do. If looking for statistical significations between groups, more people will produce a greater likelihood for significance. A result can be significant, yet not have much effect. On the other hand, you could have a large effect and not have statistical significance (likely due to sample size being small). Look at the characteristics of the people in the sample. Research is important for gathering information, but must be done in a safe and ethical way: ethical standards for research with children: http://www. srcd. org/about. html. Watch and record behavior of interest in the child"s natural environment.
