Erikson maintained children are in industry vs. inferiority stage industry vs. inferiority stage; when a mastery of cognitive and social skills give children sense of industry or competence. Elementary school provides many opportunities for children to achieve the recognition of teachers, parents and peers by producing things; industry: children with difficulties with peers or school may develop sense of inferiority. Learned helplessness acquired belief that one is unable to obtain the rewards that one seeks: can cause a person to feel completely powerless to change his or her circumstances for the better. The family: co-regulation: control is gradually transferred from parent to child in a process, children begin to internalize the parent"s standards. Ten- to twelve-year-olds evaluate parents more harshly than they did in early childhood; Still rate parents as best source of emotional support.
