1st priority was building shelter -> log cabins. Average settler arrived with: clothes, flour, salt, axe, rifle, seeds, tools, blankets. Wealthy settlers arrived w: furniture, plates, windows, cows. Big problem for settlers: having enough food to eat. Increased importance of building friendship w/ native americans (they had the hookup and knew the land) Hunting became less necessary as time continued on -> turned into recreational activity. Consumed food -> lots of emphasis on fats and salts. Pioneers migrated to mi to partake in settled agriculture. Had to cut down a lot of trees. Caused by bad odors from decaying veggies. Barn dances -> good way to meet your spouse. 1831: inherited family farm when his dad died. Wanted to sell farm and move west. 1832: arrives in detroit, searches for land. Purchased 80 acres of land in grand rapids. Migration from herkimer county (ny) to ionia (mi) Brought all of their shit bc there"s nothing to buy in.
