Unconditional positive regard- acceptance of helpees as worthwhile no matter what. Genuineness and congruence: be real and sincere, honest and clear. Empathy: communicate understanding of helpees frame of reference. Frame of reference: persons view of the situation and how he/she understands it. Concreteness: maintain a specific problem focused orientation. How to damage rapport in 6 steps: arguing for change- leads to client in opposite direction, assuming expert role- counselor has all the answers attitude, criticizing/blaming/shaming- instill negative emotions about status quo. There are so many approaches, client and counselor must work together to find the best one for this particular client. Attending, listening, observing, communicating that listening and communicating is going on (lead in questions) Paraphrasing or restating the content of the clients previous message shows that you are paying attention.
