HSC 106QR Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Allostatic Load, Autonomic Nervous System
Document Summary
What is stress: stress refers to two different things. Physical responses to stressors: two systems in your body are responsible for physical response, nervous system, endocrine system, the systems act in similar ways. Rapid chemical reactions affecting almost every part of your body. Actions of the nervous system: autonomic nervous system. The two systems together: chemical messages and actions of sympathetic nerves causes the release of key hormones, hormones trigger physiological change: Brain releases endorphins: these changes are called the fight-or-flight reaction. Emotional and behavioral responses to stressors: responses. Not all stress is negative: effective responses to stress. Talking, laughing, exercise, and improved time management: ineffective responses to stress. Emotional and behavioral responses to stressors, continued: personality, gender, experience. The gender adaptation syndrome: eustress: brought on by a pleasant stressor, distress: brought on by an unpleasant stressor, response pattern to all stressors. Exhaustion: allostatic load: long-term wear and tear of the stress responses.
