FMD 250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Empire Silhouette, Pelisse, Pantalettes
Document Summary
Revolutionary outfits were used to symbolize their political views: the red cap of liberty, trousers of working men replaced breeches worn by the old aristocratic regime, the revolutionary cockade. Women from around the world adopted several layers. Closest to the skin women wore long drawers called pantalettes with lace or ruffles or pleats at the edges (did not persist through the period except with children) Next they had the chemise, had low neck and narrowed silhouette. High waisted, relatively straight silhouette of 1800- 1820, became known as the empire line (named after emperor napoleon bonaparte) There were many variations of sleeve and necklines while the empire silhouette dominated. Women wore a coat-like garment called a pelisse, that had an empire silhouette. They also wore a shawl with a kashmir pattern. Also wore a spencer-a short jacket cut just below the bustline.
