The telegraph was invented in the 1840"s and used morse code by sending electrical impulses through a cable to a reception point. Morse code involved the use of a series of dots and dashed that stood for letters in the alphabet. The telegraph had limitation of course, includes its inability to transmit the human voice, and its inability to reach ships at sea. This affected both the military and private enterprise. In mid 1860"s james clerk maxwell theorized the existence of electromagnetic waves. Maxwell further theorized that a portion of these waves -- later know as radio waves -- could be harnessed to send signals from one point to another. In the 1880"s, a german physicist, heinrich hertz proved maxwell"s theory and created a crude device that permitted electricity to jump between two steel balls -- an emitting electromagnetic waves. In 1894 a 20 year old self-educated italian engineer, guglielmo marconi began experiments on wireless technology.
