The whole world was watching devastated while 25,000 people died, went missing and were injured, 125,000 buildings were damaged which amounted to trillions in costs (schmidt & simchi-levi, 2013). Due to the fact that the automotive manufacturing plants were the main source of economy, it was a devastating to the economy that 80% of the japanese automotive plants suspended production. Nissan, one the three major japanese automotive manufacturers experienced significant damage. Prior to the earthquake both toyota and nissan accounted for over 50% of japanese production and eventually expanded their foreign production into several other countries, including north. Nissan expanded their foreign manufacturing footprint much more aggressively than. Toyota (schmidt & simchi-levi, 2013). they accomplished this by generating value for their customers and creating a competitive advantage among over things.
