Criminal justice system gets power from government created by colonists. Social norms enforced through family, school, government, and religion. Things change over time, so do the rules. Argued everyone is born with natural rights that can"t be taken away (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness) People surrender some rights knowing that they will receive more benefits, such as safety and preservation of property rights. Government has to have physical force to protect people, but this has to be balanced. Favors giving the government less power and citizens more rights. Protection of rights is key, for example: miranda rights. They would rather let 100 guilty people free than hold an innocent person. Favors giving the government more power and citizens fewer rights. Rather take 100 people as long as they are getting the guilty ones too. System employs more than 2. 5 million people in the us, billion per year.
