Program music- instrumental music endowed with literary or pictorial associations. Theme- melodic idea used as a basic building block in the construction of a composition. Absolute music- music that has no literary, dramatic, or pictorial program. Recapitulation- the subject and countersubject are re-presented sometimes in stretto (close together) or augmented (twice as long) rhythmically. Scherzo- composition in aba form, triple meter, replaced the minuet/trio. Symphony- large works for orchestra, three-four movements. Syncopation- deliberate upsetting of the meter or pulse through temporary shifting of the accent to an off beat. Scale- series of tones in ascending or descending order, notes of a key. Dissonance- combination of tones that sounds discordant and unstable, in need of resolution. Texture- the intertwining of melodic (horizontal) and vertical (harmonic) elements in musical fabric. Counterpoint- the art of combining in a single texture two or more melodic lines. Round- perpetual canon at the unison in which each voice enters in succession with the same melody.
