Not about how to get people into prison but about how to keep them out once they have served sentence. Desistance: social process in which offender de-escalates and ceases taking part in further criminal behaviour that people grow out of crime as they mature. Ontogenetic desistance: crime curve committed by younger people and suggests. Sociogenic desistance: joining social groups, securing employment etc. develops. Identity desistance: new and better person emerges through reconstruction of relationships identity. Aim is to stop offenders from reoffending and to lead the on smooth path of re-entry into community. Community resources be put into changing life circumstances and social opportunities of offenders. Moral responsibility requires offenders to have interest in making things right and address wrongs. Offender has to give back to society.
