Document Summary

Element: a substance that can"t be broken down to other substances by chemical reaction. Sulfur: makes up 95% of the organisms body weight. Molecule: two or more atoms held together through chemical bonds. Monomers: small molecules, that can join with other similar molecules to form very large molecules or polymers. Polymer: long molecules consisting of many identical or similar building blocks linked by chemical bonds, composed of multiples of similar units called monomers. Polymers are chains with an unspeci ed # of monomeric units. Energy, sugars, starches: monosaccharide (c6h12o6) - glucose, fructose, galactose, deoxyribose, ribose. Glucose & galactose are separated (milk is sweet) *if continues links to a polysaccharide, forms starch* (dehydration synthesis - missing an oxygen and two hydrogen and loses water and forms a bond) Starch is formed entirely of linked glucose molecules. Animals store polysaccharides as glycogen in liver and muscle cells.
