Belfry with its halls first serves as both covered market and town hall: both political and commercial functions, bastides. Bastides were new towns establishes for trade: established in the 12th and 13th century, or established for military reasons, also established for asserting control over territory for agriculture and trade. People went to gain freedom from lords: also freedom from foreign claims.
