Planning a Research Project
Define your research task/set a schedule
-Determine your purpose: explain a concept, report on or argue for a position, analyze causes of an event or
behavior, etc. Answer a question about your topic
-Analyze audience to determine interest and background. Analyze your own attitude toward the project
-Determine how well your topic can be presented in the assigned format/genre (research paper)
-Make sure you know what the requirements for the assignment are
-Determine final due date so you can stay on schedule
-Create a list of keywords
-Create a working bibliography and annotate the entries
-Take notes on your sources
Choose a Topic
-Choose a topic that answers an interesting question relevant to the assignment and of interest to you and your
readers:
Consult with me/classmates
Consult the textbook
Explore newspapers, magazines, websites, etc.
Get an overview and narrow your topic
-Determine the availability of sources of your topic
-Get necessary background from general reference sources
-Start a working bibliography to keep track of the sources you're exploring
-Draft questions to guide your research
