Church tradition attributed Mark to John Mark.
Gmark was based on the preaching of Peter.
Mark was probably written around 65-70AD near the time of the destruction of Jerusalem.
Tradition says Mark was written in Rome.
The opening episode of Jesus in Mark is his baptism in the Jorden River by John the Baptist
without mention of his birth or childhood.
The spirit descends on Jesus like a dove.
A voice from heaven declares “You are my son, the beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”
In Mark, most of Jesus’ public ministry takes place in and around Galilee.
And he only makes on trip to Jerusalem where he suffers and dies.
Jesus does many mighty deeds in Mark.
The mighty deeds that Jesus does in Mark includes healings, exorcisms, and some nature
miracles. All done in and around Galilee.
Mark records a few teachings of Jesus compared to the other three gospels.
In Mark, Jesus’ general topic was the kingdom of God, God’s sovereign reign coming to
earth in a unique and special way, both present and future.
Jesus had many disciples/followers, and he selected twelve to be his apostles that he sent out
to teach and heal.
Throughout the gospels, Jesus refers to himself as the son of man most likely meaning a
divinely appointed Judge as in Daniel.
According to Mark, Jesus encountered Jewish opposition to his teachings and actions.
According to Mark, Jesus’ identity, intentions, and mission were misunderstood by his
family, the religious leaders, his hometown, the crowds, and even his own disciples
Jesus often demanded secrecy away from the public for his mighty deeds.
At Caesarea Philippi, Peter identifies Jesus as the Christ.
Jesus makes his first passion prediction when he says he will be rejected, killed, and raised in
Jerusalem.
