Formal sanctions (fines, confiscation, prison: given by appointed officials. Informal sanctions (ridicule, shun: everyone can issue. Means used to enforce respect of the laws and norms in a society: positive (rewards, negative (punishments) Wearing a pink tuxedo in class: raised eyebrows. Shoplifting: large fine or short prison term. Homicide: life in prison or death.
