Annihilate the object (or self, if blocked) As society got more complex (cid:314) less human. Seek to escape growing sense of helplessness. Contemporary capitalistic society fosters both alienation of person from person and alienation of each individual from self. Most basic aspect of human nature is tendency to self-actualize (and not limited by instincts) Fundamental dichotomy of existence - clash between feelings of aloneness and alienation and feelings of shared creaturehood. Being able to take charge / be over. Knowing who you are, where you are. Building up by parents, teachers, older siblings, friends. Frame of orientation and object of devotion.
