Napoleon sets his sights on conquering spain. Thought they were all backwards and provincial. For 6 years spain becomes a dependant of napoleon. Ferdinand the 4th voluntarily goes to exile, and puts up no resistance. Napoleon puts his brother into power, and he names himself jose the first. There are huge uprisings against napoleonic troops because the spanish had ideas about spanish autonomy and republic. Later there is a successful spanish revolt, with the aide of the english. Goya was commissioned to paint images to signify the new spanish republic. In his battle painting, he doesn"t distinguish between good and bad, instead he depicts a frenzy, the chaos of war. Two spanish men are shown as victims of the same marshal fury that drives napoleon"s troops. Less legible than the newspaper illustration of the time. Firing squad, is faceless rank of parallel rifles.
