Peter paul rubens served as an example for velazquez of the social status an artist could attain. Rubens visited spain on a diplomatic mission to resolve the conflict between england and spain over the split of the netherlands. While at spain, rubens studied from the works of titian and others. He was knighted while in spain, and was fluent in numerous languages. Rubens"s allegory of peace sought to make his case to the king of england for peace. A symbol of fertility ushers in a group of healthy children, and minerva is shown in the background driving away apollo (the god of war). The allegory notes that peace will bring abundance, fertility, and prosperity. The depiction of venus feeding the child is a symbol of charity. The children were modeled after those of his host, during his diplomatic stay at england.
