Giovanni bellini"s st. francis in ecstasy (oil on panel) of the early italian renaissance covers the landscape in light out of appreciation for it. Giorgione"s pastoral concert (oil on canvas) of the italian high renaissance uses a middle tone for the landscape. His paint is thick and opaque creating a sense of texture that simulates a skin like appearance. Bellini"s panel depicts the land in a radiance, unlike giorgione. Giorgione"s the tempest ( tempesta ) (oil on canvas) is an enigmatic painting that depicts a storm (stroke of lightning), a soldier, and a gypsy. The latter two figures might be an allegory for strength and charity as necessary requirements before a change in fortune. It is not obvious that these figures are a soldier and a gypsy, thus it is not obvious as to who they are. A coat of arms on the building might suggest the painting has a political meaning, since it belonged to the.
