Michelangelo, david, marble, piazza della signoria, florence. He offers to sculpt a piece of marble that had been messed up by another sculptor who made a gap in the marble. The marble very large and no one knew what to do with it until. Vasari argued that this was the best sculpture ever made. Rock in relaxed left arm, and sling in the right arm. Sloped shoulders, curved hips, one weight bearing leg and one bent engaged leg. Figure at rest but implying the potential of movement. Different choice from precedent of david sculpture"s. Usually david is shown after he has killed goliath, but michelangelo shows david in a state of mental preparation, to focus on the giant before engaging in the physical act. Much more dramatically rich moment that michelangelo displays. Perfectly uses contrapposto, to create a scene of suspense before the heroic act is undertaken. In a way michelangelo is a david figure.
