No intense modulation of light, no sfumato. Raphael is interested in portraying the costume, and showing off the rubies and sapphires and the expensive pearl, more so than the women. The painting is even more closely cropped than the mona lisa. Body at a angle, but the face forward. He is appointed by the duke of mantua, as the ambassador of rome. He writes a mournful elegy, where he imagines his wife looking at the portrait and saying. Only you portrait, painted by raphael"s hand, bringing back your features, comes near to relieving my sorrows. I smile, i joke or speak, just as if it could give me an answer. By an acknowledgement of a nod it seems to me often to want to say something and speak with your voice brings me solace in the long days that you are gone. So realistic that it only lacks speech to be the person.
