Document Summary
It happens when a baby is in the womb and the spinal column does not close all the way. It is the most common neural tube defect. From least to most severe, and from least to most common: spina bifida occulta. No apparent damage to the spinal cord: meningocele, myelomeningocele. Occurs in 7 of 10,000 live births. Hispanic women have the highest rate of having a child affected by spina bifida. A group of 40 inherited diseases marked by progressive weakening and degeneration of the muscles. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (dmd) is most common and most severe. It only affects boys; 1 in 3,500 births. Life expectancy is often in the 20s. Caused by penetrating injury, stretching of the vertebral column, fracture of the vertebrae, or compression of the spinal cord. Because it is during this age range that many males engage in risky behavior. Males between 16 and 30 are 80% of the people affected.
