Please note the following change in readings: kort, pp. He rejected his original plan to make the soviet union a free market economy. Wanted to change economy too quickly; would cause shortages, inflation and lead to more public unrest. He removed radicals in government, caves to hardliners. 1991- widespread food shortages, income drops 10%, private agriculture fails. Moscow city council feels they must step in and ration grain, vodka and meat. Allows free election; elects yeltsin as president. Party hardline conservatives attempt to over throw gorbachev but they fail. Gorbachev refuses and kgb never follow through. Comes into office with goal of reforming communism not getting rid of the system. Citizens could travel more, censorship was lifted. Removes element of fear of deportation and gulag. However, his reforms never went far enough. -describe the problems the new russian federation inherited from the soviet. Gorbachev took apart soviet union too much; little foundation, must start over completely.
