Natural law vs. civic law, egoism, social contracts. Other thinkers privileged virtue as center of ideas hobbes moves away from that. Big historical shift in worldview and beliefs. Big break with all those who kept virtue as the ideal: breaks with church hierarchy and buying way into heaven. Changing ideas about violence, authority, mercy, forgiveness: violent actions can get what we want, forgiveness can be seen as weakness, etc. About nature and natural law: empirical curiosity, clients gravitate towards what is naturally good, nature law to protect ourselves and one another, duty to construct family and demonstrating natural inclination. Argues that we can look at human nature and study natural state but not behave in way that is natural condition: not inclined to good when behaving in natural way. Rooted in some type of material cause/evidence (not the divine) Systematic philosophies that all changes are due to a change in motion.
