Social determinants of health and community health centers. The social determinants of health are conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels (who 2012). Ses: income, access to care, insurance access. Environment: neighborhood safety, being able to exercise outside. Food: access to food, low income, healthy food. Education: affects income, affects health (knowledge of health behaviors) Occupation: toxic substances in environment, stress, manual labor. Family support: impacts people"s ability to take care of themselves. Race and ethnicity: not the biologic manifestation of the disease but how racism affects access to care, how you are treated by the healthcare system. Heart attack and diseases in women: issues might present differently so the symptoms might not be recognized and most research is done on males.
