Helps us make sense of the world around us. Most of the theory we use is borrowed from other fields. Rely on the idea that humans think about stuff; we have attitudes etc. Cognitive map - we think about things differently, we care more about some stuff and less about other things. Latitude of acceptance - what you"re willing to accept. Opinion is in the middle, left and right are other opinions, how far are you willing to lean to one side. Cognitive dissonance - we like what we like. Via a medium to a large number of people. Social penetration - as people get to know each other better over time, the more information they share with one another. Stage 1: the greater the level you meet the expectations of another, the more likely they are to accept your message. Stage 2: the greater the rate of acceptance of a message, the more likely the message will be adopted.
