Secondary deviance can quickly become social stigma a negative social label that not only changes others" behavior toward a person but also alters that person"s self-concept and social identity. Having a criminal record and being of a certain race can carry a stigma. Study done by devah pager to determine the effects of race and a criminal record on employment opportunities. She showed that white men with no criminal record were most likely to get a job. Morevoer, white men with a supposed felony conviction were more likely to be hired than the black men who did not have a criminal record. Employers have these negative stereotypes based on really pervasive media imagery. Stigma"s can have real consequences, shaping the map of opportunities for men with criminal record and illuminates the challenges faced by black men. Internalized stigma is itself an important source of disadvantage and stress for marginalized groups.
