The capacity for suffering is part of the motivational system to get us to escape from situations that involve loss or danger, and to avoid them in the future. Man of the year: person free of anxiety. Analgesia: born with the inability to feel pain. This is an example of how sometimes things that are not pleasant have a purpose. Even though it sounds like a good thing, analgesia is associated with a lot of problems. For example, a patient bit off the end of her tongue while eating and did not even realize. Also, she had orthopedic problems because she would stand the same way for ours without moving her legs, as she would not feel discomfort. Anxiety helps us stay out of trouble when it is working right. anxiety disorders make up one of the most common categories of psychopathology today.
