CAS PS 371 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Inverse Agonist, January 30, Axon Terminal
Document Summary
Outcomes are a result of interactions between genetic vulnerabilities and experience. Environmental in uences (for example, parenting style) may modify genetics. Genes do not explain anything; environmental in uences may modify genetics. The neuron also known as nerve cells. Dendrites: branches that receive messages from other neurons. Axon: trunk of neuron that sends messages to other neurons. Axon terminals: buds at end of axon from which chemical messages are sent. Neurons operate electrically but communicate chemically: neurotransmitters are the chemical messengers. This gure illustrates the soma (cell body), where the neurotransmitter is synthesized and packaged into vescicles, packets of neurotransmitters which are spilled out across the synapse (gap). The nt molecules bind with receptors on the post-synaptic membrane. The nt are released from the pre-synaptic membrane and they go onto the post-synaptic. The nt separate from the receptor molecule and they may be metabolized in the synapse or reuptake from the pre-synaptic.
