It becomes a disorder when it becomes severe, frequent and interferes with functioning and creates distress. Substance induced depression, depression due to another medical condition. Men tend to have an equal amount of mania and depression. Depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure (+4 other depressive symptoms) Common rule outs - other medical condition, medications, substance use, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorder. Lifetime prevalence - more females than males, almost by 2x. Sad, depressed mood and loss of interest in usual activities. 5 or more symptoms (including sadness or loss of interest/pleasure), must cause clinically significant stress. First degree relatives of those with mdd are twice as likely to develop depressive disorders as are people in the general population. 3 or more symptoms including depressed mood, at least 2 years in duration. With anxious distress, mixed features, melancholic features, atypical features, mood- congruent or mood-incongruent psychotic features, and peripartum onset.
