Pre-coming out: feeling different from norm but not consciously acknowledging same sex attraction. Multiple settings: parents, friends, siblings, work, extended family, therapist. Preparing for costs/benefits: costs of being hidden has been found to have negative health outcomes, never truly accepted/seen, other potential costs. Societal homophobia job loss, child custody implications, family rejection, children"s reactions: benefits. To be seen for true self, feel pride. Some not so healthy reaosns for coming out. To undermine self and repeat experiences of rejection, abuse, neglect: repetition compulsion you repeat something at an effort to make it better this time around. To find closeness wih family that never existed, can be unrealistic, may backfire. Issues to explore with regard to coming out. Prepare for consequences by reading widely, talking to others, support group.
