Document Summary

Married couples describe intimacy as affection, expressiveness, self- disclosure, sexuality, commitment. Feeling comfortable being oneself: less likely to be polite. Willingness to confront conflict problem because a lot of couples don"t know how to negotiate conflict. Fear of losing autonomy and control over one"s life. Depression not feeling good about yourself, feeling low energy. Conjugate identity: unique characteristics/ behaviors of each spouse within the relationship (the funny one, the computer expert) Disadvantages: advantages - boosts self esteem, minimizes competition, ensures that tasks get accomplished(less conflict), disadvantages - once you are branded in this way it can be limiting and you cant have opportunities to explore other possibilities. Conjugal roles: expectations about how one"s spouse should act. Marital satisfaction is higher when there is a congruence (agreement) in role expectations for gender roles and conjugal roles. Impossible to have a relationship without conflict. How the conflict is managed/regulated as well as the intensity/frequency of the conflict determines marital stability.
