CAS PS 337 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Henry Molaison, Temporal Lobe, Viral Encephalitis
9/12/13
PS 337 - #4
Reading for Exam #1:
❖ Corkin Article “What’s New with patient HM?”*** READ
o Work with patient HM, written a long time ago
o Professor at MIT
o Goes through tasks we talk about
❖ Corkin “H.M.’s medial temporal lobe lesion”
o Optional read, good review of the anatomy
❖ Squire “the legacy of patient HM”*** READ
o Tired to know exactly what is the hippo responsible for
o A more recent paper that is a good read
o Update of HM after he had died
❖ Rosenbaum/Tulving Article “The case of K.C.”*
o Don’t spend too much time reading this
o Another skimming article
❖ O’Kane, Kensinger, Corkin “Evidence for semantic learning in... Patient HM”*
READ
o There is a controversy here, weather amnestic patients can learn new
semantic info
o Is there evidence for semantic learning in amnesic patients
o She said to kind of skim this to learn more about experiments
❖ Mans/Squire *
o Just reading thinking about if there’s evidence for amnesic patients
❖ Stefanacii/Squire*** READ
o Paper about patient EP that will reinforce the same information we already
know
o Look into what’s different between EP and HM even though they have
similar damage
o Goes over the procedures we talked about in class.
Etiology of Disease that lead to episodic memory deficits
❖ Anoxia (preferentially damaging HPC) = loss of oxygen to the brain
o Leaves MTL cortical structures intact, but the hippocampus is damaged
bilaterally
❖ Lesion (with damage to MTL)
o Like patient HM who had the surgery
o Unilateral lesion to MTL is used to treat epilepsy, but the BI-lateral
damage to HM was unique.
❖ Head Trauma (extent of damage?)
o This occurred to patient KC (motorcycle accident)
❖ Viral encephalitis (damaging MTL)
