Chapter 6: personality, motivation, attitudes, and psychological disorders. I. personality - individual pattern of thinking, feeling, and behavior associated w each person. Psychoanalytic perspective: personality shaped by persons unconscious thoughts, feelings, and memories, sigmund freud - two instinctual drives motivate human behavior. Libido - life instinct - not just sex. Death instinct - drives aggressive behavior fueled by unconscious wish to die/hurt oneself or others: three personality components. Id - unconscious energy and instincts - ruled by pleasure principle- tries to reduce tension, avoid pain, and gain pleasure, no logic or moral reasoning. Ego - ruled by reality principle - logical thinking and planning to control consciousness and id. Superego - inhibits id and influences ego to follow moral and idealistic goals rather than just realistic goals, strives for higher purpose: anxiety is felt as warning about repressed so develop ego defense mechanisms - to protect ego. Reaction formation - act opposite to how you feel - being mean to crush.
