When a child gives up an unrealistic dream, they feel like they must be part of something else. Anxiety becomes a problem when the parents fail to hold the child emotionally and psychologically. They realize they aren"t the center of the world, which they used to believe. Purpose of symptoms winnicott thought symptoms provided an alternative meaning and behaviors needed to be understood before symptoms go away. Capacity to pity child born in sense of no concern. Only relates to the world with his/her needs. But then when grown there is an ability to think of others. Ordinary devoted mother a mother is devoted to the task at hand - taking care of the infant. 3 stages of personality development 5-6 months of life - the child achieves a series of important cognitive and emotional developments: personal integration. There is no personality because the child is still growing.
