Self psychology psychologists who emphasize empathy, psychopathology is explained by unmet or disturbed developmental processes. Self-other continuum the self moves away toward the other you understand empathy. Departure from freudian conflict theory questioned the emphasis on oedipal conflicts, said that change comes from tragedy not always conflict/drives. Empathy being able to place yourself in someone else"s position. Empathic failure disappointment in life (esp. from our self-objects) Transmuting internalization self-soothing, "what doesn"t kill you makes you stronger" Parents need to make you feel special;. and you need parents to tune in with you. Self objects certain people or thoughts we contain as part of ourselves in memories. Mirroring validation/ acknowledgment we receive from parents. Idealizing children need adult figures to look up to. Mirror transference person constantly looking for validation and reinforcement they didn"t receive from caretakers. Idealizing transference person still looking for someone to look up to because parents failed to become someone lookupable.
