1895 - topographical (the mind has different levels) screened memories (filtered and idealized, from a third person pov) conscious, preconscious, censor system (defense mechanisms), unconscious. Illusion of safety: people believe bad things happen to others until they happen to themselves. 1911 - fantasy & instinct period: libido: freud"s term for describing psychological energy in general; generally, our libido helps us function, but if we have negative thoughts, we have less energy. We live together under common laws although we have different opinions - freud. Treatment phases (greenson, 1965): confrontation (people need to be confronted about their issues, clarification (when, where, how, make a theory; if someone can answer these questions, they probably don"t need therapy) Interpretation (interpret the issues and their meanings; answer the why": working through (once you have insight, you work through; this is the hardest part for people to understand; this is the long-term phase) Erik erikson: ego psychologist (inherent strength of people)
