CAS PS 241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Amniotic Fluid, Habituation, Agnosia
Document Summary
State: continuum of alertness or consciousness ranging from rigorousness activity to regular sleep. (1) regular sleep no facial expression, not responsive to most stimuli unless really disruptive. (2) irregular sleep eyes closed, jerks, starts, some facial expressions, more irregular breathing, rem. (3) drowsiness open and closed eyes, respiration regular. (4) alert inactivity most attentive to stimuli. (5) waking activity alert to stimuli, irregular breathing. (6) crying vigorous motor movement, very responsive to stimuli. Basic cry (hunger), anger cry, pain/discomfort cry. 3-4 mo. crying is less for physiological distress and more for psychomotor (less time is spent crying in general) Newborns: 50% non-rem, 50% rem; premature babies spend more time in. Rem sleep results in fluctuations in heart rate, storing and processing information occurs. Autostimulation theory: brain development requires a lot of activity, rem provides self-stimulation for brain development. The more babies are awake, the less rem sleep they get. Circumsized boys show a temporary drop in rem.
