Document Summary

Temperament: traits/dimensions that refer to behavioral differences. Involves just emotions/behavior, personality involves motivation and attitudes. Negative emotionality: child gets upset easily and intensely. Tendency to prefer being with others vs. being alone. Tendency to be intense/withdrawn with new people or vague aquaintances. Ability to attend to tasks and be persistent in them. Regulate attention to focus on what is/isn"t important. For the first two years, parents help their children do this. Note: everyone has all of these traits, but they vary in degree/amount per person. There is a continuum for each dimension. Mild to low reactions to environment generally. Negative mood, but less so than difficult temperament. Child doesn"t fall into any one category. Developmental outcomes are a result of interaction between child"s temperament type and the environment they are raised in. Problem is parents need to have both good knowledge of their child and how they compare to norms for other children.
